Alcohol Detox and Side Effects
Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance in the United States. According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence(NCADD) one in every 12 adults battles an alcohol dependency or abuse issue. Alcohol withdrawal has a range of symptoms, from a simple hangover to something as serious as a coma or death. The longer an individual uses alcohol the more deeply dependent the users brain comes to depend on alcohol. The more dependent the brain is, the more severe the withdrawal symptoms will be during an alcohol detox.
The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) reported that about half of those with an alcohol use disorder will experience some form of alcohol withdrawal symptoms when alcohol use is cut down or eliminated. The most serious form of alcohol withdrawal delirium tremens (DT’s) will be experienced between 3-5% of users. DT’s can be fatal if not treatment rapidly.
