Alcohol Detox and Side Effects

Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance in the United States. According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence(NCADD) one in every 12 adults battles an alcohol dependency or abuse issue. Alcohol withdrawal has a range of symptoms, from a simple hangover to something as serious as a coma or death. The longer an individual uses alcohol the more deeply dependent the users brain comes to depend on alcohol. The more dependent the brain is, the more severe the withdrawal symptoms will be during an alcohol detox.

The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) reported that about half of those with an alcohol use disorder will experience some form of alcohol withdrawal symptoms when alcohol use is cut down or eliminated. The most serious form of alcohol withdrawal delirium tremens (DT’s) will be experienced between 3-5% of users. DT’s can be fatal if not treatment rapidly. DT’s are characterized by fever, seizures, agitation, confusion delirium and hallucinations. Elevate offers a medical detox to prevent this catastrophe. A withdrawal from alcohol is most severe during the first few days. The physical side effects lessens after a few days to a week. The emotional impact of alcoholism recovery can last much longer, from months to years. An alcohol detox is always safest when under the surveillance of an around the clock professional medical team.


Long term alcohol use has been proven to disrupt balance and create insomnia. Proof of this is shown in many of the studies over the last decade with multiple cases primarily found with the homeless community.
