The truth is new terms pop up from nowhere all the time, like “mindfulness.” While the term is virtually everywhere, very few people may take a moment to ponder what it really means. What it really means is the ability to be aware of what is happening in the moment. For the sober or addicted person, it means taking stock of feelings thoughts, attitudes, and what the body is doing at any given moment. For the recovering drug abuser mindfulness and addiction recovery will go hand in hand.
How Can Being Mindful Help the Addict Recover?
The recovery process will be a challenge, even when using meditation for addiction recovery. The addicted person will have something they crave taken from them. For the addicted person, being mindful of how they got to their present state, and what it will take to set them free is quite necessary for success. It is the ability to finally, and successfully reason, that your present path will surely destroy everything you loved, and could love. The addict will feel an entire array of emotions, from anger and depression to sadness, guilt, confusion, and loneliness. The cravings may rack their insides, but “mindfulness” can help provide them with a clear distinction of what is real and meaningful throughout the process of withdrawal and rehab.
Staying Grounded in the Present
Being grounded in the present is quite necessary. It allows the addict to regard the past and to think toward the future in a positive way. At some point, they have to start loving themselves again to heal. Having been an addict, they most likely feel that they do not deserve love any longer, even from their own self.
How to Get Back into a State of Mindfulness
Get back to nature. Take walks along the beach. Take a trip to the mountains. Be mindful that something greater than you had a hand in all of it. Spend enough time and you will begin to once again realize harmony.
Remove distraction from your life. Your cell phone, computer, or the television can distract you from hearing your own thoughts. Do not let these things break your spell of serenity.
Be mindful of every moment. Get in the habit of acknowledging your surrounds no matter where you are, or what you happened to be doing. Make everything about what is happening right at the moment, and not in the future.
